Nothing in sailing gets the blood flowing
like the chance to race against another boat. Without actually owning
your own boat most sailors scratch the itch by crewing on someone
else’s boat. Obtaining some basic racing skills is one sure
way to join a competitive crew.
Our 12-hour Racing and Crewing course is the perfect way to acquire
the skills and teamwork necessary to make you a valuable asset on
any racing crew. While learning the basics of racing trim, rules,
and strategy you will experience each crew position first hand.
More, you will learn how each position contributes to team success.
The first two sessions are devoted to fundamental crew work under
simulated race conditions. Crew members learn and practice such
important maneuvers as tacking, gybing, sail trim and optimal crew
placement. The sessions concentrate on starting line strategies
and mark groundings as well.
The final class is showtime! You and your classmates will serve
s crew on a thrilling Wednesday night race. Experience the heart
pounding, pre-race jockeying for position, the spirited mark roundings
and the comradeship of teamwork. Everyone wins in this adventure.
After the race you are invited to Chicago Yacht Club for a ‘scuttlebutt’
session where you can meet your competitors and share some sea stories.
