Outboard Motor Operation

IMPORTANT

A. Be certain that you fully understand motor operation fully before you leave the dock. Seek staff assistance if you are uncertain or need assistance.

B. Most of CS's motors have only neutral and forward gear.

  • Operate ONLY when you are fully secured to dock or untied and facing safe water.
  • Be certain to warm up a cold engine at cruising speed for 1 minute before leaving the dock.
  • Upon departure, have the vessel completely untied, facing safe water and with the helmsperson in a position to steer an unobstructed course.

C. Motor shut down:
  • Always be ready to disengage power or kill the motor to avoid collisions.
  • DEPRESS the RED SHUT-DOWN BUTTON (on the handle) in order to stop the motor. DO NOT pull the dead man clip. This is for emergency shut down only.

1. Be certain that the motor bracket is in the lower position and the propeller is submerged.

2. Insure that the FUEL TANK IS FULL. Staff members will assist if you are unfamiliar with this procedure.

3. Shift transmission to NEUTRAL (engine shifter is located on starboard side of engine).

4. *Loosen AIR VENT (on top of filler cap) counterclockwise ONLY one full turn, until it is just loose to the touch.

5. *Open the FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE to allow fuel to the carburetor. Located on starboard side of motor.

6. Set the THROTTLE to 'START' (located on handle).

7. Be certain that the 'dead man' switch is in place under the RED SHUT-DOWN BUTTON on the handle.

8. If the engine is cold, extend the CHOKE knob fully. If motor is warm, the choke should not be used.

9. Pull STARTER CORD firmly and fully. Upon starting, quickly push the choke ½ way in until the engine is warm, then push it completely in.

10. If the engine still fails to start after 3 pulls, wait one minute before repeating procedures 2-9. Do not choke this time. If still no success, wait 5 minutes and repeat procedures 1-9 or call a CS attendant.

11. When ready for propulsion, shift transmission to forward and adjust throttle to an appropriate level. Throttle should never exceed 3/4 of full throttle.

12. DO NOT USE THE MOTOR HANDLE TO STEER THE BOAT. It should be locked in forward only.

*It is advisable to close these valves when sailing. Remember to re-open valve before starting motor.

Please feel free to ask your instructor or check-out person for more information. Remember: THERE ARE NO "BAD" QUESTIONS!
